Ehime’s Northernmost Cherry Blossom Haven: Spring’s Embrace at Osumikaihin Koen!

At the northern tip of Ehime Prefecture lies Osumikaihin Koen (Osumi Seaside Park・大角海浜公園), affectionately known as “Osumi’s Nose.” This hidden gem, celebrated for its sweeping views and exquisite cherry blossoms, started gaining popularity in 2003 after the introduction of around 40 Kawazu cherry trees. These trees were a generous gift from Kawazu Town in Shizuoka Prefecture, the origin of these uniquely beautiful trees.

The vibrant pink Kawazu cherry blossoms are among the first to signal the arrival of spring, blooming from mid-February. Their early appearance creates a magical spectacle, marking the transition from winter to spring, set against the stunning natural backdrop of Osumi Kaihin Park.

The park’s nickname, “Osumi’s Nose,” likely comes from its distinctive geographical shape, jutting out into the sea like a nose at the northernmost point of Ehime Prefecture. Climbing up the park’s slope, visitors are treated to a breathtaking view where the soft pink of the Kawazu cherry blossoms beautifully contrasts with the deep blue of the sea and the scenic Kurushima Strait.

An observation deck provides panoramic views of this natural splendor, making it a must-visit spot for anyone during the cherry blossom season. Remember to bring your camera or smartphone to capture this breathtaking scene.

Since 2022, the Namikata Kawazu Cherry Blossom Festival has enhanced the park’s seasonal charm with a variety of events. These include the sale of miso-grilled rice by local organizations and a balloon show by local temple priests. Around ten food trucks and merchandise stalls populate Karei Plaza during the festival, providing a range of activities against the backdrop of the blooming Kawazu cherry trees. To alleviate congestion, a shuttle bus service from the Namikata Fishing Port parking lot is available.

Starting in 2024, in celebration of the 20th anniversary of its merger, Imabari City will add a special touch to the annual festivities by illuminating the Kawazu cherry blossoms at Osumi Kaihin Park. This enchanting evening illumination, from 6 PM to 9 PM, offers visitors the chance to enjoy the beauty of the Kawazu cherry blossoms in a new light, providing a distinct experience from their daytime glory.

Abput Kawazu Cherry Blossom

The Kawazu Cherry Blossom(Kawazu Zakura・河津桜) is a unique and celebrated variety of cherry tree known primarily for its early blooming in Japan. Compared to the more widespread Somei Yoshino cherry blossoms that bloom in late March or early April, Kawazu cherry trees typically bloom from early February to early March, depending on the region. This characteristic makes the Kawazu cherry blossom one of the earliest signs of spring in Japan, drawing visitors who are eager to catch the first blooms of the season.

  1. Color: The blossoms of the Kawazu cherry tree are known for their deep pink color, which is more vivid than that of the pale pink Somei Yoshino blossoms.
  2. Bloom Duration: Another remarkable feature of the Kawazu cherry blossom is the length of its bloom period. While most cherry blossoms last for only about a week or so, Kawazu cherry blossoms can remain in bloom for around a month, allowing ample time for viewing.
  3. Size: The flowers of the Kawazu cherry tree are also larger than those of many other cherry blossom varieties, adding to their visual impact.
